The 1967 film starring Catherine Deneuve is full of chic, timeless yet fashionable costumes, that may have inspired some of the current trends seen on the recent runways. The film depicts the double life of Séverine Serizy, a frustrated housewife daylighting as a prostitute. The film is erotic in plot alone, but the concept that a married, well-off woman would choose of her own accord to become a hooker is just so fascinating, and almost intriguing, mainly because Deneuve's character is so classy and chic that she makes even prostitution look elegant.

The looks seen in the film were reincarnated in the recent runway collections of Burberry Prorsum (famed for their twists on the classic Burberry trench), and Dolce & Gabbana (best known for their incredibly flattering and feminine corset dresses)

Today at OAK I tried on the incredible Alexander Wang Denim & Leather Motorcycle Jacket, though the "denim" section is actually a super soft suede. IT. IS. AMAZING. Words cannot describe how much I was in love with it, though I'm still questioning the style durability of the jacket, aka is it just super trendy and THATS why I'm so attracted to it? Or in ten years will it be that vintage Alexander Wang leather jacket that I plan on giving to my hip little kids? You be the judge. Here it is in all its glory. I'm sure you've seen it tons of times, but if you haven't seen it in real life, get over to Oak or Barneys and try it on just for fun!

Nautical striped sweaters, big sailing totes, and brown leather Tropezienne sandals all invoke daydreams of fictional summers on my rich, handsome boyfriend's yacht in the Hamptons (my dream bf is also a filmmaker or artist too...yeah, I know. I'm so sad I missed the premiere of Grey Gardens this weekend, I'm absolutely fascinated by the original documentary and would love to see how Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange do in portraying the two Edies! I made my dad Tivo it at home so hopefully he remembered and I'll get to watch it in a few weeks when I go back to LA. For now I'll have to be satisfied with this gorgeous picture from US Vogue February 2009 that's reminiscent of the gorgeous Grey Gardens mansion.

PS- I haven't bought an American Vogue in god knows how long, but the current Supermodel issue is really great. They seriously need to go back to focusing on models rather than crappy actresses like Blake Lively!

VINTAGE TEES

So a few months ago when I was in San Francisco, I bought a PERFECTLY worn in vintage white v-neck tee at Wasteland on Haight st (my friend's boyfriend was absolutely shocked that I would spend $28 on a v-neck tee, he wore them everyday and bought the 3-pack fruit of the loom versions at target.) Tonight, as I was deciding what would go with my new black velvet puff shoulder jacket, I discovered the amazing white tee stuffed in the back of my dresser drawer. Voila, a wonderful outfit (along with my tribal inspired metallic Topshop necklace). As I gaped in awe at the amazing sheerness and softness of the t-shirt, i realized that somewhere online, there must be a recipe for making any old t-shirt look and feel vintage. Here's what i found from the Men's Health website, of all things. I will definitely be trying this out on those Fruit of the Loom 3-pack men's undershirts!

What you need to fabricate a vintage T-shirt:
1/4 c sodium carbonate washing soda + 2 c salt + 1 pack fine-grit sandpaper + 1 new T-shirt

Step 1: Make Your Mix
To create a vintage T-shirt, start by mixing together the washing soda and salt. "The salt acts as an abrasive, making the shirt look older," says Miyong Noh, who, as head dyer at Gene Mignola in New York City, ages clothing for designers such as Calvin Klein and Polo Ralph Lauren. The alkaline washing soda breaks down the new shirt's built-in coating that keeps it stiff, crisp, and . . . well, new. Start with one size larger than you wear; it will shrink considerably.

Step 2: Do The Wash
Throw the shirt into the washing machine with a towel or with other shirts you're trying to age. Set the machine on the highest temperature. "The heat weakens the fibers," Noh says. After the water has risen past the top of the load, dump in the soda/salt mixture and your usual detergent. After it's done, dry the shirt on high heat. Then mix up another, smaller batch of soda and salt, and repeat the whole cycle three to five times, drying on high heat after each wash.

Step 3: Brush It Off
Now for that pesky logo. "Most printed shirts are screened with a resin-based material called plastisol," Noh says. "You can distress the hell out of the shirt, and the plastisol logo will still be pristine." Here's where some elbow grease comes in. Using fine sandpaper, lightly swipe at the logo using circular but irregular strokes. "You have to make the aging look natural," says Noh.

I havent tried it yet because I'm waiting to get to my parents house where we have an in-house washing machine (I figured it'd be too hard to try at the sketchy laundromat downstairs), but i'll definitely let you know and see the results of my endeavors. i would post a pic of the amazing vintage tee but I can't seem to find my camera right now.

FINALLY topshop is opening in NY, juuuust before I make the big move to the topshop-less desert known as Los Angeles. Darn it. I'm currently in la la land, getting ready to hit up the good Melrose and 3rd street stores on Friday. Shopping in San Francisco was pretty good (mainly vintage), I got a cute vintage blue with white lace dress that was reminiscent of Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby

Also, I happened upon the RVCA store on Haight in San Fran and tried on the Erin Wasson flowered Sideshow Dress, $140, which is made of silk and I REALLY liked, but its just too much like the vintage one I got for my 90s party.

I don't know about you, but I'm absolutely obsessed with vampires. I think Edward Cullen (aka Robert Pattinson) is THE perfect man, dangerous and sexy, yet loving and just, well, perfect. Yes, I'm a nerd who has read all four Twilight books, and watches True Blood on HBO (its amazing, seriously). Therefore, the Twilight Prom spread in Teen Vogue is absolutely perfect for me, even though I went to my prom four years ago.

Though I'm trying to save money for Berkeley/San Fran/LA next week, whenever I visit the Think Coffee on Bowery and Bleecker, I just can't resist stopping in at INA, one of the greatest resale designer stores in New York (there are several locations). Today, my finds included a gorgeous, black, label-less tank, and a solid silver Robert Lee Morris cuff. The latter was a little out of my price range so I had to leave it behind, though I may pick it up later. Here's one like it, you seriously can't tell the amazingness from this picture.

FINALLY, a little bit of the Erin Wasson for RVCA line is available, though i'm still hankering for that black and white vest thing that Rumi has. Apparently at Barneys Co-op in Soho they only have the blazer below, the flowered dress, and a black top (I'm not sure which one). I'm going to Los Angeles next week so I'll check out the line at the new local Barneys at the Americana, which is pretty gross, but I'm so glad theres a Co-op on the East side now!

Also, the collaboration between Alexander Wang and British denim brand Superfine is now available at Eluxury and OakNYC. They created a capsule collection of three styles in three washes. They're nice, but $400 for a pair of jeans is ridiculous unless they make your ass look like Jessica Alba's.

Is anyone else getting really tired of seeing the same faces on the runways? I'm sick of Racquel Zimmerman, Natasha Poly, Lily Donaldson, Chanel Iman, and even Freja Beha. They lack the alluring innocence and true beauty of girls like Sasha Pivarova (such a fascinating face), Siri Tollerod (in my header), Natalia Vodianova (the most beautiful model EVER in my opinion), Toni Garrn, and Karmen Pedaru.

F/W 09 Stella McCartney was clean and classic, with several fabulous blazers and overcoats that made me the teensiest bit nostalgic for winter. JUST KIDDING. The delicate lace was tasteful and victorian-esque, yet I have to admit that the shoes and bags disappointed me immensely.

YSL was a little bit disappointing, though it did make me realize that I REEEAALLY need a pair of leather pants, like, NOW.

These shoes are absolutely the best black heels I've ever seen in my life. I may have to save up for them.

Viktor & Rolf was not as crazy as usual, (remember the bold NO designs from last year?) but their white-faced models, combined with the recent viewing of Stella M's delicate lace inlays made me recognize what will probably be a HUGE trend next year: Victorian era. I know it may be hard to picture all the crazy studs and ripped denim fading into the trend vault, but I think it'll happen. My predictions: Leather will stay, studs will go, lace will stay, fringe will go. What do you think?

EDIT: I shouldn't say studs will go, all the DIY stud-gun obsessed bloggers out there will kill me! I'm just kidding girls, what do I know? ps-i wish i had the time/energy to DIY.

In my opinion, today was the first day of spring in New York, my favorite season in this city of frequently unpredictable weather. It was an amazingly balmy 67 degrees outside, and anything above 50 makes New Yorkers ecstatic. I tried this on at Barneys Coop just for the heck of it (oh $800 for a 80's body con dress, no biggie). I could hardly get it zipped up, but when I did I realized the appeal: FULL BODY SPANX, just like an Hervé Leger. YUMMM. Lucky Diane Kruger, she got to play the most beautiful woman in history (Helen of Troy, what a compliment!) and she probably got this A. Wang dress for free. GRRRRRR.

PS. I've been going through StyleSightings archives when I'm bored, all the way back to last summer. It's so getting me in the mood for driving around LA in my brand hybrid car (suggestions anyone?), drinking iced coffee and playing loud happy music, something like Ben Kweller.

These sales are killing me. Today after an audition in Chelsea I wandered on down through the West Village in search of Mick Margo, one of the only NY boutiques that carries my current obsession, Jerome Dreyfuss handbags. Inside the adorable little West Village boutique (located INconveniently next to the amazing Cookies and Milk bakery), I found my long lost love, the Alexander Wang Herringbone Coat ON SALE!

I snapped it up of course, but may have to have the shoulders altered a bit since its a little too big for my taste (though the permanently pushed up sleeves are incredible).

Along with tons of amazing Alex Wang stuff, there's also plenty of gorgeous, pebbled leather Jerome Dreyfuss and Isabel Marant bags, as well as a plethora of perfectly draped Isabel marant dresses and t-shirts. Mick Margo also stocks tons of Repetto ballet flats and wingtips.

All in all, the combination of the cobblestoned West Village streets and the abundance of pieces from my favorite French designers made me incredibly nostalgic for Paris, where my family will be travelling sans moi this summer, sigh.

Alright, sorry for the lack of posts. I've been crazed with classes and my new internship at LUCKY magazine in the web department (LuckyMag.com), which is both a blessing and a curse--in that I see too many beautiful clothes and accessories daily, forcing me to run home every night and google, ebay, and shopstyle my ass off. If ONLY i could do this as a real job.. maybe someday. But for now, here are some things on my mind.

1. WHERE OH WHERE IS THE ERIN WASSON FOR RVCA LINE!? I went to Barneys yesterday hoping desperately to get a peek at that amazing black and white vest thing and that great flowered dress (both of which I will fight tooth and nail for)

yet there was NOTHING. Kristin from Bleach Black/RVCA said that the line is a bit delayed and she'll keep me updated.
I did, however, try on the Alexander Wang black knit tank with mesh(ish) cutouts, but unfortunately its cut too a little weirdly in the armpit area. I also fell in love with the Wang white miniskirt

Although I rarely post on it, except maybe that great first post on thrift shopping, I ADORE vintage clothes. Resale designer, re-worked vintage, and plain old goodwill/salvation army finds; I love them all. Yet for an online blog in which "where-to-buy" links are a necessity, vintage clothing is difficult to write about. Hang onto your fedoras vintage lovers, online vintage shopping just got easier. The Family Vintage Ebay store houses lots of hip finds from the 70s and 80s, including 80s staples such as jumpsuits and Laura Ashley dresses (didn't you have one when you were a hippie child in the 80s? I did) So check out my favorite picks from their current auctions, and HURRY, because some of these great pieces are ending really soon!

Fall Shopping List Part Deux

As my roommate/BFF well knows, I've been shopping up a storm recently. I now work at the Rebecca Taylor Boutique in Soho (come visit me!) so, making money has got my shopping juices flowing. an APC sailor coat, the gorgeous leather skirt seen below, Sigerson Morrison Balenciaga-esque gladiators that aren't too trendy gladiator-esque, 3.1 Phillip Lim red sunglasses, and a vintage 80's black fringe dress from Rumi from Fashion Toast are just some of my many purchases. I see it as "building a fall wardrobe". Lollapalooza 2008

While I was stuck in the sweaty New York heat last week, friends of mine (along with countless models and celebs) were living it up in Chicago at the Lollapalooza Music Festival, featuring great musicians such as Cat Power, Wilco, Iron & Wine,The Kills, and Girl Talk. How crazy is it that Sarah Jessica Parker's Dior heels that she sports in the Sex and the City movie have already spawned several knockoffs?

The real ones are unfortunately unavailable, but the knockoffs look just as great, though I can't promise they'll be as well made or as comfortable!

Recent purchases: a cool white Mason dress from Bleu on La Brea, a black Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony t-shirt dress from Barneys Co-op, a See by Chloe black jumper with visible silver zippers, a red and white Marc by Marc Jacobs heart print pinafore dress, a dark blue Elizabeth and James sweetheart-neckline strapless dress with peacock feather designs on it, and of course tons of amazing thrift shop finds! It's officially summertime for me, and right here is my pick for the #1 summer trend. If you all can remember back to Stella McCartney's Spring 08 runway show (or my review), you may remember the colorful beaded purses and shoes (which actually fell apart during the show)

Well, the faults have been fixed, and the beaded wooden platforms, one of my fave new shoe styles, and the gorgeous beaded clutches, have finally debuted in high end stores (and on celebs)

The Best of the Costume Institute Gala 2008

The theme was Superheroes, complete with statues of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman by award winning production designer Nathan Crowley. The elite group of the hottest stars, models, designers, and socialites all gathered in the gorgeous halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art last night at the Costume Institute Gala, considered the Oscars of the fashion industry. The fashion industry has recently become obsessed with superheroes, like in the Harper's Bazaar spread with Lindsay Lohan.

So, albeit slightly lower in taste than I would have expected for the most glamorous night of the year, a superheroes theme fit the bill.
I've edited the 165 pictures of the Gala from style.com to those I actually liked, but truthfully there weren't a whole lot of outfits that I would choose! Taste was often questionable in the dress choices of the young and the fabulous pictured below...let me know what you think!

**THE GOOD**

Tom Brady, in custom Tom Ford, with Gisele Bündchen, in Atelier Versace. In my opinion, Gisele's taste is so so.

Thakoon Panichgul with Raquel Zimmermann, in a dress by the designer. I'm still on the fence about this one...

Sofia Coppola, in Marc Jacobs and Van Cleef & Arpels jewels, with Marc Jacobs. I like the dress, it's just not that flattering.

Nicolas Ghesquière and Charlotte Gainsbourg, in Balenciaga. I LOVE Balenciaga, but I'm not so sure about this dress.

Naomi Watts, in Fred Leighton jewels. Channeling marilyn Monroe/Mermaid?

Mario Testino with Lily Donaldson, both in Burberry. #1, there's a reason she never smiles... #2 This dress blends into her skin.

**THE UGLY**

Bathing Beauties

It's definitely that time of year again; the gyms are way too crowded, and my blindingly white thighs are begging me to start a new diet regimen. It's SWIMSUIT SEASON. So, though I don't exactly feel ready to show my pasty skin to the world, in a month and a half I'll be basking in the Hawaiian sun, so I've forced myself to start thinking about which bikini will best compliment my paleness... and my style.

As you may know, I'm a total sucker for anything classic and/or reminiscent of old Hollywood Glamour

A swimsuit that will bring out the Audrey Hepburn in you. Lux Lamour One-Piece $88

You can do no wrong with a simple black bikini, especially with an ultra-flattering halter top cut. Malia Mills Danceteria top $140, and bottom $130, though if you pair the top with a cheaper black bottom from Gap, $16.99, you'll save more money for those pricey piña coladas!

A classic red bikini can do no wrong, and this Victoria Secret suit is on sale for $19!

Another fun, classic piece is the Padded solid underwire glamour top from J Crew, $48, which comes in 16 different colors, and can be paired with any color bottom ($38)

Who could forget the lovable jelly sandals we all wore in the 90's. You know what I'm talking about; those strappy things that came in a rainbow of colors that were slightly reminiscent of today's hot gladiator sandals?

I check shopbop.com DAILY for new Alexander Wang pieces. Sad, but true (I'm currently writing to you wearing my gorgeous Wang Tiger Intarsia sweater.)

Today, to my surprise and delight, my daily net-window shopping led me to discover that shopbop.com just started carrying Alexander Wang's brand new handbag line, featuring buttery soft pebbled leather and multiple silver zippers (reminiscent of Wang's leather pants and skirts seen on the recent F/W08 runway)

Though it's quite pricey ($650), I'm sure the bag is as well crafted and grunge-chic as Wang's gorgeous clothing. I also love that the name brand isn't emblazoned all over the bag (like a Louis Vuitton)

or instantly recognizable (like a Balenciaga Motorcycle)

HURRY to shopbop.com if you're as much a Wang lover as I am, as the bag will probably sell out faster than any "it" bag in HISTORY!

Designers often have muses,
take Marc Jacobs and Lil Kim for example.

Yet rarely do the muse and designer form a team, working together on collections, with said muse becoming both an inspiration AND a business partner.

23 year-old Alexander Wang and model Erin Wasson lived in the same New York apartment building, and after bumping into each other several times in the elevator, Wang expressed his admiration for her style and asked her to look at his collection. Wasson landed a job with Wang, working feverishly as a stylist backstage at his spring collection. She was in charge of putting his carefully crafted pieces together in interesting ways; tucking, pinning, and belting her fellow models. Erin worked a second time for Wang on his newest collection for Fall 2008, and has become a stylish inspiration for the up and coming designer, who already has several seasons under his belt, along with a huge celebrity following.

Wang's designs, as well as his own personal style, are so cool and effortless, as is Wasson's, that I went on a hunt for as many pictures as I could find of the duo.

Clearly, Wang's Fall '08 line was modeled after a combination of their styles: a little bit 90s punk rock, a little bit sexy biker chick. Wang's collection is sure to be a hit, it's definitely my favorite of the season so far!

Also, I am SO excited for Wang's new purse collection to come out!

Style.com says Wang is aiming at creating classic cool bags that will work for years to come (like Chanel's 2.55 quilted handbag). Though this sounds quite ambitious, knowing Wang's knack for remaking classic pieces (like leather Jackets, blazers, and trench coats) with hip updates, I have no doubt that the line will be incredible. The bags, which debut this month, all retail for under $700 and will sell at only five stores, including Edon Manor and Kirna Zabête in New York, and Satine in Los Angeles.
