The theme was Superheroes, complete with statues of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman by award winning production designer Nathan Crowley. The elite group of the hottest stars, models, designers, and socialites all gathered in the gorgeous halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art last night at the Costume Institute Gala, considered the Oscars of the fashion industry. The fashion industry has recently become obsessed with superheroes, like in the Harper's Bazaar spread with Lindsay Lohan.
So, albeit slightly lower in taste than I would have expected for the most glamorous night of the year, a superheroes theme fit the bill.
I've edited the 165 pictures of the Gala from style.com to those I actually liked, but truthfully there weren't a whole lot of outfits that I would choose! Taste was often questionable in the dress choices of the young and the fabulous pictured below...let me know what you think!
Reminiscent of Catwoman, model Caroline Trentini looked stunning in Miu Miu heels and Van Cleep & Arpels jewelry.
Socialite (and Anna Wintour's daughter) Bee Shaffer looked radiant in an intense Nina Ricci gown
Christina Ricci, in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci Haute Couture and Bulgari jewels. Very Wonder Woman-esque
Victoria's secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a daring, feathered Burberry gown
Scarlett Johansson looked radiant in Dolce & Gabbana and Fred Leighton jewels, with Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce
Thandie Newton, in Chanel
Kate Moss and Stella McCartney, both in the designer's designs
A colorful Kate Bosworth, in vintage Chanel Haute Couture
Socialite and Heiress Lauren Santo Domingo in Nina Ricci, with Ricci designer Olivier Theyskens
Model Jourdan Dunn, in Peter Som, with the designer
model Jessica Stam, in Proenza Schouler
The face of Balenciaga, Jennifer Connelly, in, what else? Balenciaga.
actress Camilla Belle, in Armani Privé and Fred Leighton jewels
Diane Kruger, in Alberta Ferretti, with Joshua Jackson
Claudia Schiffer, in Fred Leighton Jewels, with Valentino Garavani
French socialite Coco Brandolini, in Alberta Ferretti, with the designers
John Demsey and model Hilary Rhoda
Guinevere Van Seenus, Cecilia Dean, Kate Mulleavy, and Laura Mulleavy, all in Rodarte.
model Natasha Vojnovic, in Alexander Wang, with the designer and Philip Crangi
It's a little bit matronly for young actress Claire Danes, but anything by Narciso Rodriguez (pictured) is fine with me!
Marcus Wainwright, Sasha Pivovarova, and David Neville. Boring and unflattering, I expected better from you, Sasha!
Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and Roberta Armani, all in Giorgio Armani. A bit of an off choice for Katie
Tom Brady, in custom Tom Ford, with Gisele Bündchen, in Atelier Versace. In my opinion, Gisele's taste is so so.
Thakoon Panichgul with Raquel Zimmermann, in a dress by the designer. I'm still on the fence about this one...
Sofia Coppola, in Marc Jacobs and Van Cleef & Arpels jewels, with Marc Jacobs. I like the dress, it's just not that flattering.
Nicolas Ghesquière and Charlotte Gainsbourg, in Balenciaga. I LOVE Balenciaga, but I'm not so sure about this dress.
Naomi Watts, in Fred Leighton jewels. Channeling marilyn Monroe/Mermaid?
Mario Testino with Lily Donaldson, both in Burberry. #1, there's a reason she never smiles... #2 This dress blends into her skin.
Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen, both in Calvin Klein Collection. That dress is awful!
Natasha Poly, in Phi, with designer Andreas Melbostad. She's stick skinny, yet she chose a dress that doesn't flatter her!
Mischa Barton, in Missoni.
Michelle Trachtenberg. Oh come on, Michelle, your first Gala and you wear THIS?
